Dena paona is a marvellous creation of the famous novelist
Sri Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, where he is trying to show the condition of
the society of that era. We can see the ups and downs of the relationship
between the main protagonist "Shoroshi" and the antagonist
"Jibananda Chowdhury". After the sudden demise of Kalimohan Babu
(Jibananda's Maternal Uncle), Jibananda Chowdhury comes to Chandigarh to take
the illegal ownership of that village. He starts torturing the locals with his
inhuman actions. In the meantime, he confronts with a "Vairavi" where
he tries to do the same with her several times but in vain.Circumstances force
Shoroshi to stay whole night in the drunk Jibananda's house. This created a
ripple amongst the local villagers when they come to know about this incident.
But Shoroshi gave a legal statement to the police and magistrate that she went
to the zamindar's house willingly. Jibananda was freed from all offences due to
this statement. But by showing his patriarchal powers, he started conspiring
against her with few foreman/leader and tried to throw her out of that village.
While Shoroshi was 10 years old, she got married to this young man who actually
left her on that very day. Then Shoroshi (she was known as Aloka in her young
age) was forced to become vairavi of Chandigarh. As no man can become vairavi
during that time, so she is forced to do so. She was given all the
responsibility of the temple at a very young age. In fact she was not allowed
to keep any sort of relationship with her husband. Meanwhile Jibananda had to
leave his hometown and eventually Shoroshi became the mother figure of all the
locals.
When Shoroshi decided to leave Chandigarh because of the
inhuman behavior of Jibananda and the other conspirators of the village, a new
picture flashes in our way. Jibananda gets to know that Shoroshi (i.e. Aloka)
is his actual wife, he pleads in front of her for not leaving the village. All
of a sudden we could see a drastic transformation in Jibananda's approach. He
starts realising his miss-deeds. He begs in front of Shoroshi by holding her
hands and surrender while saying "I want to leave like a normal human
being and I want a family. The days when death will come in my way, I want to
surrender myself in its arms". But Shoroshi refuses his appeal and shows
her strong aura. Shoroshi walks off leaving behind everything and giving the
responsibility of the village along with the Chandi Temple in Jibananda's
shoulder. After such incident, he became a total transformed person. He starts
thinking about the welfare of the locals. The leader/headman couldn't tolerate
such change in his behavior and thus they start conspiring against him.
Eventually, Jibananda's house was setto fire and shockingly he didn't react to
it. When he was busy constructing a bridge in his village, he meets with an
accident which took him near to death.
While Shoroshi left him, he wrote a letter to "fakir" mentioning few wishes of his life which actually forced her to come back to her husband. But, while Shoroshi comes back to Jibananda to start a new life with him holding his hands, then everything was over as Jibananda was very near to his death leaving Shoroshi in a severe pain. In this play we get to see how women were tortured in this patriarchal society. This is still in practice in recent times. Men use women mentally and physically and objectify them in every possible way. But, exceptionally few women are there who stands up with their head up and goes against all the odds of the society and shows us that we all are equal irrespective of our genders and deserve respect from each other...
