Laila is a darkly comic and gripping tale of Mithu a lonely woman in her forties, and Madhabi her manipulative aging mother whose sweet smile belies a vicious temperament. Complaint ridden Quick eyed and wickedly sharp Madhabi plays the helpless invalid while unsmiling and direct Mithu keeps things comically uncomfortable. The two women have developed a mutually dependent relationship in which each vies for superiority over the other, both bound to an emotionally empty, dead-end life. Madhabi constantly accuses Mithu of neglecting her, and the daughter accuses her mother of faking illness to keep her home. The play exposes the cruelty of a mother – daughter relationship that has been pushed beyond the extremes of loathing. When Pota, Mithu’s long forgotten friend suddenly appears in her life, the audience senses that he offers Mithu the hope of escape from her miserable existence. Madhabi’s interference in Mithu’s first and possibly final chance of a loving relationship sets in motion a chain of events that savagely leads to a terrifying climax. The dynamic between the duo is full such tension and suspense that will keep the audience guessing till the very end. This timeless and unsettling play was staged for the first time in Sydney in 2022 and captured the heart of audience. Laila adapted by Dibyendu Dasgupta from “The Beauty Queen of Leenane” by Martin McDonagh. The Beauty Queen of Leenane was nominated for 6 Tony Awards in the year 1998 and won 4 Tony Awards.
